Since 1923 it has been part of the Republic of Turkey after Mustafa Kemal Atatürk led the regime that overthrew the last Ottoman Sultan, Sultan Mehmed VI. Atatürk is seen as a hero in Turkey and there are flags, statues, pictures, etc. of him all over the country.
